Questions for Consideration

Magolda and Ebben provide four questions which illuminate corresponding anthropological concepts. As you try to make sense of the operations of evangelical subcultures and their relationship vis-a-vis what is "normal" consider these:

1. What function do these groups play on U.S. college campuses?

2. How do these groups promote a collective resistance to the dominant culuture on their campuses?

3. What are these groups reacting against? What do these groups tell us about "normal"?

4. These groups have some inherent contradictions and internal struggles; what are some of these struggles and contraditions?

Additional Questions

What needs, both particular and universal, do evangelical groups tend to address for college students?

In what ways do you imagine these groups further or support learning environments that allow students to deal with complex problems outside of the classroom, to make meaning, to develop healthy and productive relationships with their peers?

Are there liabilities associated with these groups in regards to student learning?

Critical subculture theory claims to have "emancipatory" ends, in what ways does studying powerful subcultures support the promotion of justice?
